We sure have taken a shining to this city! After getting settled into the hostel last night we took the receptionist’s advice and headed down to Rue Gretry for some dinner and drinks. What a zoo! The streets are barely wide enough for a single vehicle, and the sidewalks are choked with cafe seating, not to mention all the people. We took a few pics – very cool area! Ended up eating at an Italian place, and believe it or not I had the best lasagna of my life there (sorry mom!) After dinner we went to Delirium Cafe, which is an awesome little pub that has 2004 different beers on the menu. The menu is the size of a phonebook!! We (well me, really) decided to call it an early night after all the walking around during the day, and headed back to the hostel after only a few drinks. I have a feeling we’ll put more effort into it tonight ![]()
We were up fairly early today, had a fruit-filled waffle for breakfast, and have spent the day on the tourist stroll checking oot the sights. There are some amazing churches and palaces here, but many of them are covered in scaffolding. I assume they’re being fixed up for the real tourist season, so we’re outta luck! Still, it’s a lot of fun here, and I’m glad we decided to spend 2 nights here rather than just 1… Today’s the hottest we’ve had this trip: 30 degrees! And people are STILL wearing pants and jackets! We must be the only 2 in shorts for miles around… I really don’t get it
Ha, thanks for the shout-out. Glad you’re checking oot what Belgium has to offer. But seriously, 2004 kinds of beer? Had no idea. Terry would love it there! I’m totally jealous of the 30 degree weather, even tho’ we aren’t doing too badly here right now. Maybe 8 or 10? Is that typical weather there? I thought the people would be wearing little britches with panels and suspenders and poufy blouses and…oh, never mind.
Can hardly wait to see pics! Can you post some? Morning hugs guys. xxoo
Hey, I LOVED Brussels…especially the Belgium waffles…don’t forget, there’s two types of waffles, Brussels waffles and the regular ones. The good one is not as sweet, crispy on the outside and really soft on the inside. They give you ice cream and a little creamer full of melted Belgium chocolate….yummmmm! Couple of things I LOVED and I hope you check out. You must go to Brussels Grand Place and touch Serclaes’ arm. He was a martyr and you touch his arm for luck (even if you don’t believe in it, it’s still cool)…he’s a bronze statue.. and parc of the Heysel (nice park..or parc…), the have the Atomium there – coolest structure – based on the Atom (if you haven’t guessed), it was closed when I was there for renovations (Everything was being renovated actually, I was not pleased!), but it should be up again. Manneken Pis of course…but it’s not as spectacular as everyone makes it. Anyhow, you lucky boys, it sounds like you are having a blast, the family history tour should be wonderful! Travel well and safe! Ying
