the spirit of Christmas?

Tonight I decided that I would break with tradition and not leave things until the last second.

Instead of running around on the 22nd or 23rd of December and trying to get the few gifts I “need” to buy and dealing with burnt out sales staff, grumpy customers, massive lines and no parking like I usually do… I decided I’d make a quick stop on my way out for the evening at the local electronics megastore to pick up a gift for my brother.

While I was there I saw a display of behavior that makes me pause and wonder how parents stay sane.

MSGN – 1st Kelowna Edition

So last weekend we finally had the inaugural Kelowna Chapter Magic Satchel Games Night!

It was perfect for a first go, not too many people and everyone who attended came to participate. Having only 7 of us was great because as no one knew all other attendees, the small number allowed and encouraged everyone to get to know each other a little. I think if we’d had a larger turnout people may have grouped themselves with those they already knew.

And we played the first ever double-decker old-school Mille Bornes! No, we didn’t add a London bus card. We actually combined 2 of the original-style Mille Bornes decks. (We did only use one draw/discard tray though… and we did leave in the 2 custom cards… oh “Azal Inhamination” you’re my favourite! [we don't talk about the other one])

There is definite interest in having another one, though it will likely have to wait until January. But we didn’t get to playing Ticket to Ride, Slamwich, or the bean counting game (which I have been assured is much more fun than it sounds).

Speaking of games that are more fun than they sound, maybe we’ll bring Squatter: The Australian Wool Game with us to Calgary this weekend!

it’s oh so quiet…

…and I can’t figure it out. I seem to recall signing up for this with 3 others, but where have they gone?

Do I need to tell everyone a story…?

perhaps one titled “I was a preschool stoner”, “my favorite books”, “holiday planning is boring” or “101 ways riding my bike is better than Calgary Transit”.

you pick, I’ll tell.

annnd go.

oh, hello there

It has been a quiet week on the ol’ posting front, and that is basically tied in to the fact that it has been a really… really slow week. I’ve done nothing I would consider “important” enough to actually write about on an individual basis, so here ya go… it’s summary time. :)

Flames lose (then win).. boo! (yay!) Stamps lose, Bombers win.. Yay! Oilers Win (then win then lose) yay! (yay! boo!) Canadiens win! yay! Tucker gets beat down by Avery… yay! I really miss playing hockey with my team (stupid season long suspensions)… boo!

…and that was the week in sports. Continue reading

p/d/p November

From the pages of “in the nick of time news” comes this reminder of the impending p/d/p event!

6pm GMT on Saturday November 10th. This translates to 10am Pacific, 11am Mountain, and 7pm for some of us that may be nearer to Berlin than to Calgary.

anybody else, use this time converter to get your time zone.

This time the theme is “faces”… not feces Dave, faces. No rate my poo pictures on this go ’round.

It’s a good thing I checked my camera, my batteries just died. I know you all wanted to know that. :)

The decision is made..

It took a bit of internal debate and convincing (plus a phone call to my mom), but I finally clicked on “purchase this trip” today to make my travel plans official.

I will be leaving February 23rd for Auckland, NZ and I will spend the majority of March travelling around. The general plan is to travel from Auckland down to Queenstown, but I highly doubt it will be a straight line journey. I have a feeling it will fall more in to the category of ‘wherever the wind takes me”.

As of right now, I have no idea on how I’ll be getting around, where I’ll be staying, or what I’ll be doing… but I do know I’ll be doing it in New Zealand. :)

March 21st I board a plane in Queenstown, do a brief pit stop in Auckland, and then hop over to Fiji for 5 days before finally returning home. You know.. for that all important vacation after the vacation :)

March 26 I will board a plane at 1030pm, and after a stopover in LA I will arrive home at 810pm… on March 26. Stupid time zones.

There are still 6 spots open when I bought in… anybody interested? :D

back in business..

After a bit of an umplanned vacation, the site is back.

Everything appears normal and I did a full backup this morning (to replace the previous backup in early August…eek.) just in case things go horribly wrong again. After flipping around a bit I find the site to be somewhat sluggish, but that just might be my internet connection here at work.

how often should I be doing a backup? daily? weekly?

Currently it is (suppsoed to be) monthly, but would it matter if we were to lose a month of posting? I imagine if we did any major changes to the site design or whatever it may be a bit upsetting to lose that, but I’ll leave it up to you guys to suggest how dilligent I should be.
