Indy 4: kingdom of the cash grab

ugh.

I know I likely had my expectations set a bit too high for this movie as it is the latest installment to one of the fabled favorite trilogies of my youth, but when you come out of it saying “well, we’ve definitely seen worse movies” you are really reaching to find that silver lining.

I can’t fault Harrison Ford as he delivers a fairly standard and solid Ford performance as an older Indiana, but I can only imagine how he must have struggled to choke out some of the crap he was forced to say. I picture him getting the final script, reading it through and wondering what he had done to deserve a punishment like this.

“So I return the skull and then.. wait.. what movie are we making again?”

pointless and most times unbelievable stunts (and not in the good way like some of the earlier films), a weak script (from Lucas? the hell you say!), CGI that very obviously looked like CGI and out of place for a movie set in 1957, and it was all rolled together with something that I guess could be called a plot but I wouldn’t blame anyone if they got it confused with swiss cheese.

For those that have seen it, I’m sure you’d agree that it almost seemed like they were trying too hard to live up to the Indiana legacy (eg. bringing back people from the earlier fims)… trying and failing.

I don’t know where to begin with pointing out what is wrong with this movie, so I’ll just leave it up to you to decide if you want to go see it.

If you do, I can’t say I didn’t warn you.

12th Annual Happy Ship Day

I’m coming up on 29 now boys and girls, and it’s time to celebrate! Newcastles and Ship Burgers are on the menu, hopefully served up with a side of sunshine, good music, and great friends. I’m aiming for the usual 12-hour marathon, so show up at the Whip & Spanker anytime after 2pm on Saturday, June 7th for your free high-five!

(Mom might even drop by with some banana bread if we’re lucky :D )

May long weekend 2008

Ahh.

May long signals the return of camping season (for those of us not crazy enough to camp year round), making it truly one of the happy times of the year. It isn’t the greatest day this earth has ever known, because as we all know that is my birthday… but May long ranks pretty high up there on the list.

This year we headed up on Friday, trying to get there early enough to ensure we got our traditional spot. We did manage to make it out there by around 1pm, but sadly some family and their camper had already taken the perfect spot by the time we arrived. After a brief tour to see what other sites had to offer, we decided on one with a fairly large area cleared of snow (the piles in some of the sites were up around 5 feet high), and a reasonable amount of distance from neighbours.

After we set up the site, we went and explored a bit up the Smith-Dorrien highway to try and find a hike that didn’t have drifts up to our waists. This was not to be as the Black Prince Cirque trail was clogged with snow, but we did have a good deal of fun “helping the thawing process” along the side of the creek nearby (read this as trying to see how big of a chunk we could break off the banks at one time). Repeat this at another creek and the north end of Lower Kananaskis Lake and then it is time for burgers and Big Bear!

Ok, I’m lying about being excited to have Big Bear (really bad beer in a 1.18L format), but it was certainly cold enough to choke down hanks to the snowbank refrigerator we had stored it in since we set up the site many hours before.

Saturday was supposed to be the day we conquered King’s Creek, rebuilding the bridges we had constructed last year and adding more further along the trail, but the dang snow and a creek that was as big as I’ve ever seen it made reconstruction nearly impossible as landmarks I expected to see were either washed away or completely under water.

Our very first bridge did survive the winter, but I think it may require some cleaning up as I believe that a fairly large log jam has formed above it and will wipe that bridge out if given enough water and a few more logs. I’ll have to do a picture comparison to see if my brain is telling me the truth, but I’ll have to get the new ones off Scott at some point to do so.

All in all, I’d say this weekend was a success… no rain, no wind, no snow, minimal jerks in other sites, and some seriously good time spent watching fire-tv. plus Big Bear! :)

oh look… pictures!

3 in a row = n/a

Yea, beeeatches, it’s dave’s third post in a row!!!

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!! (gonads and strife)

And to further some of my ramblings from the other day, I have uploaded some of my tunes to Last.fm. Two of them are songs I recorded when I lived in Halifax (one written there, one written in Calgary). And then there is the most recent thing that I have recorded, which was back in 2005 I think. So there you go, now you can go listen to me singing, playing guitar and making an ass out of myself under the pseudonym irwin guiffrey.

And if anyone’s understands the gonads and strife reference without having to look it up, I will congratulate you with a hampsterdance.

Delirious Love

So I have finally moved the home of my web business/portfolio over to it’s own properly named website. I am getting some new business cards printed so it seemed prudent to have burningfishdesign.com as the URL on the card.

The exciting part of this is that now my old site, irwinguiffrey.ca, can hopefully start housing various music experiments and projects. My old computer is almost completely purged and ready to be reformatted as a “music only” device. Slowly I am moving towards creating more music, which is something that has been put off for far far too long.

Oh, and I have Neil Diamond tickets for GM Place in Sept… and I have 2 extras! Any takers?

Head

Headers headers headers! We need new headers!!! I added new pink & purple ones today… though purple was a quick lame one. More more!!! New headers!!! Go!! Build!!! Image(ine)!!!

Almost dropped the ball again on this, but p/d/p goes off tonight at 12am GMT.

Not bothering with the link to the converter, I’ll just tell you it is 6pm in Alberta, or 5pm in BC.

The theme is motion, do with that what you will.
