About Josh

It's peanut butter jelly time!

…And the wolves sang us to sleep

Well, I’ve already equalled my camping trip total of last year at a massive 2 weekends, so I take it as a sign this will be a great year for outdoor pursuits. The snow was pretty much gone from the sites, but most of the hiking trails were still closed. Looks like Mount Sarrail is closed for the season, too. Boourns!

The girl and I spend some time at the dam (the water is so low!) and managed to get quite a bit further up King Creek than on May Long, but had to cut it short because of Sunday’s rain. The best part: after turning off the fire and crawling into our bags we were treated to a symphony of wolves. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything like it before – it was chilling! So cool, just to lay back and hear them call to each other. Looking forward to the next trip!

And can I just say that putting recycling bins at the sites was LONG overdue?? Kudos for getting that setup :)

12th Annual Happy Ship Day

I’m coming up on 29 now boys and girls, and it’s time to celebrate! Newcastles and Ship Burgers are on the menu, hopefully served up with a side of sunshine, good music, and great friends. I’m aiming for the usual 12-hour marathon, so show up at the Whip & Spanker anytime after 2pm on Saturday, June 7th for your free high-five!

(Mom might even drop by with some banana bread if we’re lucky :D )

Fish Tales

Better late than never… well, VERY late in this case… but still…

Spent the better part of 5 days on and around Vancouver Island last month with my dad, uncle and brother. It was another of our Mostly Annual Fishing Escapades, and this was probably the most eventful one yet! It may also be the last on the Pacific, but we’ll see how things go next year…

Now, on to the Fish Tales: Continue reading

MSGN comes of age

I have to say that this last Magic Satchel Games Night might just be the new standard to which all future events are compared. Dave & Jen, you guys rock! Perfect location, great snacks, lots of tables & chairs, and a great group of gamers made it a night to remember. I’m rather intimidated to hold the next one – maybe I’ll defer to Alan for August ;)

Again, thanks for having us, for giving us places to sleep and a great breakfast, and for digging my phone out of the couch the next day. Hope you have a safe drive back today!

Rise Against kick ass!

Or is that “kicks ass”… I never figured that one out. Regardless (not irregardless), they came, we saw, they kicked ass, and we loved it! Every minute of every song too, and I don’t say that about many bands these days. After a strange Deftones show on the 15th (couldn’t really make out any music and the vocals were up WAY too high) it was great to see such a tight band on the 20th. They played mostly new stuff, with a few older songs thrown in for those who remember their Fat Wreck Chords days. Even a couple acoustic songs – very cool! And the fans were really great too – reminded me of our singalongs at NIN shows ;)

This show definitely solidified Rise Against on my favorite bands list – can’t wait for a new album!

Metric, awesome, again

They’re simply one of those bands that *owns* a crowd, regardless of how many times they’ve played a city or how many times they play the same songs. The stage presence of all 4 members is overwhelming, which isn’t all that common in most bands. Flames Central might not be an ideal place for shows but it definitely worked out alright… maybe they’ll put a more reasonable limit on how many people they let in next time ;)

Can’t wait for the new album!!

11th Annual Happy Shipday!

It’s that time of year again: my mother’s 28th anniversary of birthing me (breach, jaundiced, 23.5 hr labour, no pain killers, I’m regularly reminded) is on June 13th. Huzzah, 2 points for mom! To celebrate her stubborness (and inhuman pain threshold) we’ll be gathering at the Ship & Anchor for big bottles of Newcastle, apple pie shooters, and Ship burgers this Saturday, June 16th. Show up anytime after 2pm if you’re up for a laugh, as I tend to break out my best impression of an overly-friendly leg-humping fiend who will do just about anything to make for a good photo opportunity. Photos to follow, I’m sure :)

Edit: only one photo was taken that night – thanks Steve! And yes, that’s a hot pink giftbag hat…
