early season disc golf report

Earlier this week I was out in Canmore, and (like any trip out there) I brought my discs for the off chance I would be able to pay the Nordic Centre a visit and check out the course. Our staff meeting wrapped up early, so Scott, myself and another co-worker made the decision to at least go see what the conditions were like.

I mean really, why would we rush back to the city when we could spend more time in the mountains?

This was one of the few times I have been up there and there was next to no wind… what a treat! Some sections of the course were still covered in snow / mud, so we made a decision to play the “front 8″ (Holes 1-4, then 15-18). You are reading correctly, they have a full 18 out there again. woo hoo! :D

The holes we did play were perfectly dry, except we couldn’t understand why there wasn’t a tee marker or basket for hole 1. After playing what we believed to be hole 1 we found out why… they moved it to what was #2 last year. #4 is the big uphill shot to the left of the path, #15 was leading back to the bridge and the monster #16 is from the bridge (I think this was 7 last year?).

We didn’t really keep score (I think I was +1 for most holes?), but for the first game of the year I felt pretty darn good about some of my throws.

I took some pictures so I should have something to show you soon.

Tonight I went to Home Depot to pick up some supplies for the rip and tear that will take place in my kitchen this weekend (stupid water :( ), and there was a plan to meet up with Scott afterwards for a round in Baker park. I got off to a slow start, Scott got kid duty tonight, and it looked like we would have to go some other time.

I finished up with my shopping, and then made the decision to just go see if the course was even set up (since the groundskeepers have a serious hate-on for the disc golf course and tear it down whenever they can). I make it to Baker park at about 10 to 9 and it was pretty much the perfect end to a long week.

The park is 100% trimmed down, every fairway is perfect, every tee box (rocks) are in place, and all the hole markers (rebar and milk jugs) are up and clearly marked. Someone spent some time naming the holes too, which I thought was pretty cool.

Playing “the dragon’s teeth” and “the helipad” sounds so much cooler than holes #5 and #6. :)

The setup is almost identical to what it was last year, and I had a blast firing around the course in the twilight. A quick investigation showed that at least some of the remaining holes are in place, but advancing darkness made me decide to take the fun I had on the front 9 and leave it at that.

Thanks Baker Park… I needed that.

  1. Way to get out early in the season!

Unfortunately there aren’t a lot of course (somewhere around zero) around Kelowna. There are a few up around Kamloops I guess.

But I did meet a cab driver last week that plays and there is a bit of a community here that plays at Knox Mountain (which is right at the north end of downtown), so I am going to give Tim a call some time to go check it out.

Dive Luongo dive. You do Vancouver proud.
