ABBOTS-FOUR!

Tagline: “No one returns alive!”

For those who aren’t in the know, we do one (or two) trips each season to tropical Abbotsford to cheer on our Flames prospects in person and attempt to drink the city dry. In holding with the great tradition of earlier Abbots-trips, this year’s promises to be just as beer-y, just as hockey-y, and perhaps even more pancake-y. A brief summary of the illustrious history of Abbots-events:

Kölsch, etc.

kranz.jpg

One beer style I’ve been obsessing over lately is not super well-known- certainly not among non-beer geeks- is kölsch.  If you’ve never had the opportunity to try one (and, chances are, you haven’t- technically- more on that later), you really should try and find some!  It’s a light (in colour, ABV and hoppiness) hybrid beer that is perfect for hot, sunny days!

So, what is kölsch and how does it differ from other light beers?  Certainly we have no shortage of those.  Primarily, kölsch is an ale, not a lager.  Most light beers (Bud-like beers, pilseners, etc.) are lagers.  What’s the difference, you ask?  Well let me tell you…

Humulus lupulus

So, as a craft brewer, I feel really lucky to live in Calgary.  Did you know that Canada is the second largest barley producer in the world, behind Russia?  Did you further know that half of Canada’s production of barley comes from my home province of Alberta?  That’s great news for those of us who buy malted barley in bulk.  For a mere $25, I can buy enough 2-row malted barley to make 30 gallons of beer (two kegs!  320 bottles!).

If my pants were made of melon

so the other day I was thinking
big thoughts

not big like a mountain thoughts
not burning bridge thoughts
not continental plate thoughts

but fleck under the contacts thoughts
splinter beneath the skin thoughts
quiet wispy soul-crushing thoughts

i know the answers
we all know them
they are as universal as skin and mountains

it’s the implementation
that kills

and the giant hunching whispering unknown
is
on the other side am i reborn
or undead

Game 6 – Calgary

We will be in town attending game 6 on Sunday, which means I will likely finally be regaining my voice sometime on Tuesday while driving back to BC after screaming my face off at a live game instead if just at my TV. Swollen uvula. I am bringing my hardhat. Though Jen says the Flames have to win the cup before I even have a chance at winning the hardhat bet.

I can see the future and it looks like this:

Yea, you take it Grier!

And does anyone else find it funny that the injury Chara has been nursing is his ribs after he did that terrible “it’s the ribs” radio ad for a restaurant when played for Ottawa.

Karma baby, it’s a bitch… just like San Jose is going to be on Sunday.

Go Flames!
(and go road clearing crew in Roger’s Pass!)

(and Al, you are so going over the waterfall on Saturday… unless you want to see if you can irrigate 5 sheep farms? I know it sounds dull, but Squatter is a pretty good game!)
