Victory is mine!

TTR Germany

After god only knows how many times of playing Ticket to Ride, I finally managed to pull off a win last night. And WHAT a win.

We were playing the Marklin edition (Germany), and I kept 3 of my first 4 destination cards (2 long routes, 1 short). At first glance it didn’t seem like they had any relation to one another, but with a bit of creative thinking (and collecting a ton of train cards before I started claiming routes) I managed to string together a fairly impressive route on the right side of the board. I got two of the 7-car routes, and while everyone kept questioning what I was trying to do when I only had a single 2 car train on the board, I stuck to the plan. I did a second destination card pull with 4 train cars left in front of me (everyone else had quite a few, so I was confident I’d be able to do something with at least one of them), and that was really the margin of victory.

In the end, I completed three long destination cards (worth 16, 18 and 22 points), as well as one of the shorter ones (for 8). If I hadn’t made the final pull for destination cards on my second last turn the game would have been a lot closer, but I had 132, the two next closest were 105 and 104, and then 73 and 69 to round out the scores. This was without passengers (which further inflate the scores in this version), and perhaps the main reason I was able to do this successfully was because I wasn’t playing with people who make it their sole goal to f with my plans.

you know who you people are..

Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo 2011

So, for the first time ever I decided to go down and check out the Comic Expo over the weekend, and it was overwhelmingly geek-tastic.

The crowd on Saturday was incredible, and it was in large part due to the fact that William Shatner was on site to do a couple of autograph sessions as well as a photo op. Needless to say, you always knew where he was going to be because the crowd would shift from one side of the room to the other, stampeding over anyone unlucky enough to get in their way. ;)

Ramblin’ man 2009

To continue my verbal spewing this evening, it is time to talk about travel. Everyone likes travel! yaaay! wheee!

The Bad News: I have no plans for an other side of the world, gone for a month by myself sort of extravaganza in 2009.

The Good News: Working for a company that encourages you to take time off (unlike my previous employer who “strongly suggested” we only take time off in the slow time, and only with their approval) means I will be making a couple of smaller, gone for a week types of trips this year.

minor updates

Over on the “Games Night” page, Scott has been kind enough to provide the latest information. While it was needed, I’m glad to see he didn’t increase his post count while doing it. I don’t know what I’d do if he got to 5 total posts by the end of 2008, so this leaves him plenty of room to work with. :)

In other news, I finally got around to updating the cycling map page. I decided to do away with the route line (for now) and just go with markers indicating where I finished up each year and where I am currently. Huzzah for being in Atlantic Canada!

I figure that if I maintain my current pace I should be done my coast to coast virtual journey by the end of the year… and then I may modify the route I have been using to include the northern coast as well.

what can I say, I need to have something to ride for. ;)

creating your own board game

We have started working on a game.
It will involve colours.
I am trying to think of a way to avoid the typical winner/loser aspect.
Must make it somewhat non-linear.
Is going to take a lot of thought and various incarnations.
May have to go through a few MSGN game night trials where everyone who participates can give feedback.

It will be awesome! Count on it!

Game 6 – Calgary

We will be in town attending game 6 on Sunday, which means I will likely finally be regaining my voice sometime on Tuesday while driving back to BC after screaming my face off at a live game instead if just at my TV. Swollen uvula. I am bringing my hardhat. Though Jen says the Flames have to win the cup before I even have a chance at winning the hardhat bet.

I can see the future and it looks like this:

Yea, you take it Grier!

And does anyone else find it funny that the injury Chara has been nursing is his ribs after he did that terrible “it’s the ribs” radio ad for a restaurant when played for Ottawa.

Karma baby, it’s a bitch… just like San Jose is going to be on Sunday.

Go Flames!
(and go road clearing crew in Roger’s Pass!)

(and Al, you are so going over the waterfall on Saturday… unless you want to see if you can irrigate 5 sheep farms? I know it sounds dull, but Squatter is a pretty good game!)
