#43 – End of the regular season!

Is it wrong to say that the end of my first NHL regular season came as a relief? It’s been an absolutely amazing year so far but these last 10 games have been emotionally exhausting. AND I haven’t been playing the way I should. I know that. I haven’t been playing enough of a team game. It’s these damn rookie scoring records that I could just might possibly tie or break. So I find some shifts I am just playing for myself, playing for the numbers, for the stats. And other shifts I am trying hard to not be selfish and I am over thinking everything and terrible in a totally different way.

And through the final stretch the stats we still decent. My goals, assists and points per game weren’t my best of the year but were above my average. But my team play… yeesh.

And now a picture for distraction: Continue reading

#43 — after 61: #7 returns and a couple of significant milestones

Game #51 signified the All-Star break for the Preds, though for 3 of our team it wasn’t much of a break as we were chosen to participate in the All-Star weekend! Myself, Shea Weber, and Patric Hornqvist all represented Team Lidstrom for the game itself and I was pretty pleased to don my classic #7 again!

I was pretty honoured to center the top line between Daniel Sedin and Jarome Iginla.

Poem/Prayer that my Grandfather sent along

I asked God
Author Unknown

I asked God to take away my habit.
God said, No.
It is not for me to take away, but for you to give it up.
I asked God to make my handicapped child whole.
God said, No.
His spirit is whole, his body is only temporary

I asked God to grant me patience.
God said, No.
Patience is a byproduct of tribulations; it isn’t granted, it is learned.

I asked God to give me happiness.
God said, No.
I give you blessings; Happiness is up to you.

I asked God to spare me pain.
God said, No.
Suffering draws you apart from worldly cares and brings you closer to me.

I asked God to make my spirit grow.
God said, No.
You must grow on your own! But I will prune you to make you fruitful.

I asked God for all things that I might enjoy life.
God said, No.
I will give you life, so that you may enjoy all things.

I ask God to help me LOVE others, as much as He loves me.
God said…Ahhhh, finally you have the idea.

Thank You babycenter.com

Being a father makes me:

  • busy
  • proud
  • cuss

One of my great saviours when the frustration and cussing come out has been the knowledge of those who have also experienced the massive changes of being a first time parent. Some of this knowledge comes from my own parents and my wife’s parents, some from friends and some from the glorious internet. And do you know why I love the internet… because the internet does not judge, the internet does not have an opinion of how we should raise our child and the internet does not get offended if we want to try a parenting style different to yours. But the internet can be full of a magnitude of crap and self-righteousness  that few people could (or would be willing to) express face-to-face. But that is another glorious thing about the web: I get to filter out as much of that crap as I want and just stick with the good stuff!

And babycenter.com for the first years of our daughter’s life has been “the good stuff”. It isn’t one person’s option; it is a collection of many voices and many experiences so it balances out well. AND it respects (enormously) that all children are different and the parents choose to parent differently.

Here are the recent articles that have saved my sanity… or that I am working towards using more regularly to save said sanity.

  • Making errands fun - great ideas to keep getting groceries from being a huge fight or a massive time suck.
  • Beating the whines - dear lord, do I need this right now.
  • Prime time fun: Alternatives to TV - yea, I use TV as a babysitter, especially to cook dinner. Or sometimes I let her treat the bathroom near the kitchen as a giant water table and just deal with the large wet cleanup later. Here are some really awesome ideas, that are mostly a lot cleaner than bathroom destruction, that I am going to be trying for the next fews weeks!

So, thanks babycenter! You’ve been great!

Now you just need to also have a wine delivery service!

Season Halfway Point! #43 — after 41

Well, there it is. Game 41 is done, the mid-point of my rookie NHL season. Forty-one games in a league I wasn’t even sure I’d be in this year! And though there were some rocky moments, for the most part living the dream has just gotten better and better. Third line to 2nd to 1st. Rookie, drafted in the 4th round, 106th overall, and yet I now lead the league in both goals and points!

The defensive side of things has been great for my lines as well, keeping me at the top of the league in plus/minus!

I can’t believe how well things have gone; it truly feels like I belong in this league! And it was through this last 11-game run that I hit another big milestone: I finished the last of my Season Expectations (the “Stretch Goal”  of 22 assists)! Game 37, not even halfway through the season, and I’d finished them all!

But there are a couple of areas where I still need to improve and the coaching staff Continue reading

#43 — after 30

So my first 6 games as the #1 centre went awesome… for the most part. (See the 3rd video below for the example of the rotten.) Hornqvist & Kostitsyn are just so easy to play with: crisp passes to me and always moving to good areas for me to find them for good scoring chances. Six games with my new linemates were good for 10 more points for #43!

Looks like it’s time to purchase a home in The Protestant Vatican!

How you get to be on the #1 line

Effort like this at both ends of the rink must’ve helped convince the coaches to give me a chance on the 1st line. This clip is from game #24 and it was after this game that I got the news of my promotion to the top line.

Here’s hoping things keeping going so well. This rookie season is off to a tremendous start!
