Thank You babycenter.com

Being a father makes me:

  • busy
  • proud
  • cuss

One of my great saviours when the frustration and cussing come out has been the knowledge of those who have also experienced the massive changes of being a first time parent. Some of this knowledge comes from my own parents and my wife’s parents, some from friends and some from the glorious internet. And do you know why I love the internet… because the internet does not judge, the internet does not have an opinion of how we should raise our child and the internet does not get offended if we want to try a parenting style different to yours. But the internet can be full of a magnitude of crap and self-righteousness  that few people could (or would be willing to) express face-to-face. But that is another glorious thing about the web: I get to filter out as much of that crap as I want and just stick with the good stuff!

And babycenter.com for the first years of our daughter’s life has been “the good stuff”. It isn’t one person’s option; it is a collection of many voices and many experiences so it balances out well. AND it respects (enormously) that all children are different and the parents choose to parent differently.

Here are the recent articles that have saved my sanity… or that I am working towards using more regularly to save said sanity.

  • Making errands fun - great ideas to keep getting groceries from being a huge fight or a massive time suck.
  • Beating the whines - dear lord, do I need this right now.
  • Prime time fun: Alternatives to TV - yea, I use TV as a babysitter, especially to cook dinner. Or sometimes I let her treat the bathroom near the kitchen as a giant water table and just deal with the large wet cleanup later. Here are some really awesome ideas, that are mostly a lot cleaner than bathroom destruction, that I am going to be trying for the next fews weeks!

So, thanks babycenter! You’ve been great!

Now you just need to also have a wine delivery service!

Bringing my loves together

So I really enjoy hockey, I enjoy building web sites, and I like supporting the community feel of the place were I live, currently Westbank (soon to be named West Kelowna), BC. So naturally a good place for for me to advertize my web business is a local community rink where parents take their children to learn to skate and play hockey! I have a 4foot-by-4foot ad going up on the wall beside the scoreboard.

I have a craigslist posting where you can see what the ad looks like!

I really enjoy doing local projects and hopefully this will give the right kind of exposure to do even more!

new skin for my web design – burning fish 2.0!

Yessir. I have built a new home for burning fish design. The old design had been around for a while with only minor tweaks along the way, so it was time to freshen up! There are a couple of sections that still need to be filled out and that will happen later this week. So check out the new home of Dave’s Okanagan Web Site Design. Invite your family over or send it to your friends! I am very happy with the way the new site turned out.

And if for some reason you want to see the old one, it has migrated here.

And remeber to p/d/p on oct 31! The details are in the previous post!

Delirious Love

So I have finally moved the home of my web business/portfolio over to it’s own properly named website. I am getting some new business cards printed so it seemed prudent to have burningfishdesign.com as the URL on the card.

The exciting part of this is that now my old site, irwinguiffrey.ca, can hopefully start housing various music experiments and projects. My old computer is almost completely purged and ready to be reformatted as a “music only” device. Slowly I am moving towards creating more music, which is something that has been put off for far far too long.

Oh, and I have Neil Diamond tickets for GM Place in Sept… and I have 2 extras! Any takers?

dis-ORG-anized

At first I thought it was a New Years facelift, some inconvenient downtime for major maintenance that couldn’t take place with people constantly logging in and paging about.

Then I turned to the zeforums to discover that the little voice inside was right.. the ORG is gone.

Nobody saw it coming, and speaking for myself I had done very little in the way of external linking to so many of the people that I had on my quacker / friends list. I mean, why would I? they were already all in one convenient place, and it sure didn’t seem like it was going anywhere any time soon.

vacation = end; FeedBeads = live

First, a kudos to an entrepreneur. A friend of a friend has decided to go into business for herself creating and selling handmade nursing necklaces and I have to say that if she keeps at it with the passion that she has shown so far, she can’t fail! It was a lot of fun to build her website. She has put a lot of work into this venture: FeedBeads – Funky Beads for Funky Babies.

Vacation is Gone. Capital G. Like Hugo until his next birthday except that I don’t live in a wine cellar.
