I think I've seen photos of that ossuary as your descriptions bring up some visuals in my mind. Pretty crazy, and yes I would have thought somewhat creepy for sure. Hard to imagine this being the result of somebody's paid job. Weird. 8-] Too bad things haven't gone quite as you would have wished but sounds like you've improvised well and found some good alternate touristy things to do.
